Today’s Outfit: Back in Black

As August comes to an end summer is beginning to wind down here in Illinois, meaning one thing for me: fall clothes! Fall is my favorite season of the year and with the cloudy skies today it was the perfect time to dress for the season. I spent the day shopping with a friend and eating the best store-bought gelato on the market. Seriously, I am now obsessed with talenti gelato, the Coffee Chocolate Chip one is to die for! (TRY IT!)

Pretty much everything I wore today I have had in my closet for quite a while, the jeans are a pair I’ve been wearing for over a year now from Hollister. Don’t be afraid to re-wear clothing you have had for a while, I don’t know about you, but I don’t spend $30 on a shirt to wear it once or twice! Make the most out of the things you already have in your closet, you’ll be amazed by the fun outfits you can create.

The t-shirt I’m wearing is just a cheapie I picked up a while ago from Target, and the cardigan is from H&M. I can’t stress enough to invest in basics! A mistake that we all make is purchasing too many articles of print, or pieces that are not very versatile. Invest in a couple of plain tees, sweaters and tanks. Basic, plain colored clothing items are essential to any outfit and easily accessorize.

The booties I wore today are actually a pair from last winter, I picked them up at Kohls during a sale at the end of the fall season. They have been one of my favorite items in my closet since. My bag is the only new item from my outfit today, I purchased it last week from (where else) Target on clearance for about $14. I finished my outfit off with my gold-plated black statement necklace. I’ve had it stashed away for a while now, it’s so versatile and I absolutely love it.

I just want to quickly mention my hair today; I tried something new. I’ve been seeing tons of girls wearing a little half bun lately and I’ve been wanting to try it. After a few tries I think I have the do mastered. It’s quick, easy and probably my go to hairstyle from now on!

Happy Sunday everyone.

Lady Antebellum Concert

First of all I want to apologize for my absence this week. I just started school and my life has been crazy! But from now on I will be posting a lot more, I have some fun DIY posts planned so be on the look out for those in the coming week.

Anyway, last weekend I went to the Lady Antebellum with Hunter Hayes and Sam Hunt at Tinley Park in Chicago, and I was completely blown away. My best friend and I actually purchased the tickets minutes after they went on sale so we were able to get pit tickets for an extremely good price. We left the house hours before the gates opened for parking and waiting in line on the side of the road and ended up getting 2nd row!! My excitement was unreal and their talent was even more unreal.

There were tons of memorable moments from that night, of course there was this nasty girl behind me who insisted on pushing me to try to jump on stage for Sam Hunt. (Some people these days have no self-control or manners…) But besides that I cried during Hunter Hayes’ performance and again when Lady A came out for a second encore to sing “Landslide” by The Dixie Chicks (AKA: my favorite song since I was 7). But the most amazing and memorable moment was when Charles got off stage to huge a beautiful girl with down syndrome standing next to us celebrating her sweet sixteen. The link to the video on my twitter is below! (*Warning: It may make you tear up a little!)

Today at Target: End of Summer Sales

I’ve mentioned already that I am obsessed with Target. Being young and on a budget it’s typically my go to store for almost everything. Today I did a little mini haul, taking advantage of some really awesome deals in the mean time. I visit Target quite frequently so check back weekly for new posts on what I bought “Today at Target!”

What I bought:

First I picked up the cutest little thank you notes from the dollar section. I always keep a stash of thank yous in my desk, and I recommend to anyone and everyone to do the same! In today’s modern world of technology we often lose the value of saying thank you, as in taking the time to write a short, hand written note in a card. Target always has adorable thank you cards with envelopes in packs of 8 right in the dollar section. The ones I grabbed today have a simple flower graphic pattern and read thank you below.

The next thing I picked up were a pair of white, gold-plated dangling earrings. I am SO obsessed with this type of earring, I probably have 10 similar pairs in different colors. If you don’t already check out Target’s clearance section in accessories, I strongly advice you to every time you go. These adorable earrings dropped from their original price of $7.99 to a clearance price of $5.59. I will happily keep that extra $2.40 in my wallet!

Shoes was my next destination, the Super Target near my house has a GINORMOUS shoes section and it was my lucky day because all summer shoes were 50% off! And on top of that Cartwheel had another deal giving me another 25% off all shoes purchased today, 75% off! If you are not yet a Cartwheel user, Target’s coupon app, I am telling you now you should be. The app allows you to search up to 12 coupons and use them combined, you are able to scan items to search them and the best part is all the coupons you use are combined digitally into a single bar code to be scanned at the register. My beaded flip-flops originally sold for $29.99 with my combined discounts I purchased them for $6.73.

Finally I tried on a few items in the clothing department. I purchased a striped t-shirt dress along with a cute little beaded tank that can easily be transitioned from summer to fall. I found the tank in the clearance section dropped in price from $19.99 to $9.98. The t-shirt dress was full price at $19.99 but Target currently has a buy one get one half off sale on Mosimo dresses. So my shopping partner in crime (my mom) also purchased a dress so we could save 25% off each! I got the dress for a final price of $15.34.

So on today’s mini Target haul I spent around $40 on all the adorable items you see below!

Note: Unfortunately not all Target clearance items are priced the same online as they are in some stores, but be sure to check out your local Target store to see if they still have these items in stock! Also the thank you note cards cannot be purchased online, but different variations of these cards can be found in most Target store’s dollar sections. Although the prices fluctuate all other items I purchased today are listed below.

Last Night’s Outfit: Little Black Dress

Recently I attended my very first quinceañera. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what a quinceañera is, it is a celebration in the mexican culture for young women’s 15th birthday. The quinceañera marks the coming of age for young girls, representing the passageway to womanhood. This ceremony is one of the most extravagant celebrations in the mexican culture and is filled with honor (for the birthday girl, as well as her family), festive dancing and of course delicious, authentic food.

Another aspect of a quinceañera is the girl celebrating her birthday typically wears a large ball gown, and all of her guests are expected to dress formally. So of course when I was invited to my boyfriend’s cousin’s I immediately needed to get a dress. And I figured, nothing is more classy than a classic black dress.

I have always had a thing for lace, I currently own two other black lace dresses of different styles. Lace is a timeless material and adds dimension to a classic black dress. My favorite aspect of this dress is honestly the sleeves. They give the dress a more conservative appeal which I adore. Sometimes less is more! Another perk of this wonderful dress is the ability to accessorize, I paired it with a simple pair of black pointed toe heels, my new favorite nude purse and a simple pair of gold-plated rhinestone earrings. Although I went for the less flashy route this time, this dress can easily be paired with bright accents such as red heels, or even a sparkling statement necklace.

I want to focus on my purse for a second. I actually picked this specific one up in a resale shop near where I live for about $15, but you can find similar ones in the links below. If you have not yet invested in nude accessories I highly recommend you do so. Nude is the color of times, I have even seen fashion magazines call it the new black. What’s so fun about this color is it isn’t actually one color at all, it’s a whole color family of skin tones. There are more rosy nudes, darker nudes, and of course every shade in between. Accessorizing with nudes is my true go to lately, this purse is the latest addition to my collection but I have also been adoring nude heels, statement necklaces and even bras. (If you do not currently own a nude bra BUY one! And never ever wear a white bra under your whites clothing!)

Today’s Outfit: Baseball Tee Dress

This summer I have found that there is nothing I love more than dresses. Especially comfortable, cotton, easy to wear, easy to wash dresses. So when I saw this dress walking into Forever 21 earlier this week I had to have it. My love for baseball tees also fueled my fire in making this purchase, but the best part, it was only $12.

T-shirt dresses are arguably one of the biggest trends this summer. And I love them, I love that you can wear them casually or dress them up, I love the way they look with heels or sneakers, I love love love everything about them, except they don’t love me. Every t-shirt dress I have tried on has completely eaten my petite figure, and yes, I know they are supposed to be loose, but they are also supposed to be flattering, and on me they are not.The cinched waist of this dress was exactly what I needed to achieve the t-shirt dress trend.

P.S. Can we talk about converse for a moment? I really love converse. They are such a versatile, not to mention comfortable shoe. Despite this I also typically do not find it appropriate to pair any dress with any type of sneaker, but for this dress it worked. A little sporty, a little chic.

The Green Monster

In my journey to better health I stumbled upon one of the most popular health trends of our time; the green smoothie. I have always loved veggies and fruit but even a food lover like myself chooses the mac n’ cheese over the salad 9 times out of 10. So, I was fascinated by the idea of liquefying my daily vegetable and fruit servings (which is now 2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables!) and decided to try it out for myself.

What is a green smoothie?

A green smoothie is literally what it sounds like, and looks like! It is a smoothie that is green. The idea behind a green smoothie is to mix greens such as spinach, kale, swiss chard, collard, etc. with fruit in a smoothie form. Why you may ask? Because greens such as those listed above contain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and beneficial phytonutrients (plant-based nutrients that help to support your immune system).

Simple Green Smoothie’s listed their top 5 reasons they love green smoothies as being:

1.) They are a natural energy booster

2.) They can help to naturally lose weight

3.) They help keep your immune system strong

4.) They help fight disease

5.) They are quick and easy to make

My tips for you

First and foremost I want you all to know, if you blend a bunch of greens together and expect it to taste good, you’re wrong. I learned this the hard way. Mixing spinach, kale, celery, cucumbers, bananas and raspberries together will look green and taste bad. Making a delicious green smoothie is a trial and error process, so don’t be discouraged if your first smoothie doesn’t taste or look the way you expected (mixing fruits and veggies of different pigments will result in a brown smoothie).

Also don’t try to cram your entire day’s worth of vegetables and fruits into your breakfast! Balancing your nutrients throughout your day still applies, try adding protein powder to your smoothie to give yourself an extra boost, or scramble some eggs on the side! (Eating too many veggies at once could also result in an unhappy tummy.)

I recommend adding at least double the amount of fruit as vegetables to your smoothie, in my favorite green smoothie recipe I have listed below I add way more fruit than vegetables. That is simply a personal preference of mine with this specific recipe! Don’t be afraid to add more veggies and try smoothies of different colors! (I have found I love adding carrots to mine.)

Finally reference the internet for more great smoothie recipes, Simple Green Smoothies has dozens of great recipes to try and many other resources to guide you!

Happy smoothie making and enjoy!
