Pins of the Week 10/10/15

Since I started this blog I have been trying very hard to keep up with my posts and I have found that it is more difficult than it seems. But at the start of this week I dedicated myself to posting daily. I’ve been planning posts ahead of time, organizing them in a notebook and brainstorming constantly. I am so dedicated to this site and my readers, but sometimes life throws a curveball and that dedication becomes difficult to uphold. These last two days specifically have caused this. The internet at my house has not been working and on top of that I have been very sick, but I love building this blog and I plan to continue to do so. I won’t give up.

But onto the actual purpose of this post…I have said it before and I will say it again, I love Pinterest. It is my go to site for pretty much everything, I always find ideas for outfits, recipes for meals and inspiration for life in general. I pretty much spend all my free time scrolling through my feed, so I thought it would be appropriate and fun to share some of my favorite pins each week (considering many times they inspire ideas for this blog). If you aren’t on Pinterest already I recommend setting up an account! Also, follow me! My username is shannonmgilkey.

Fashion:

Pin #1: I love the mix of neutral colors in this outfit along with the booties and hat. Booties are the IN thing this fall and I can’t wait to own a pair in every color! Pin #2 isn’t necessarily full-blown Fall, actually I would classify it as more of a wintery dress, but I adore the scalloped bottom. Pin #3 is my favorite, I’ve been dying to have a scarf in that exact color combination and the color combo of this entire outfit is great.

Food:

Pin #4 is a recipe for Parmesan zucchini chips, which sound delicious! Pin #5 is a Mexican Corn Dip and is actually from the same site as #4. Check out: danmdelicious.net for tons of mouth-watering recipes! Pin #6 is Spaghetti Squash with bacon, spinach and goat cheese. Anything with goat cheese, bacon, or spinach always catches my eye and this recipe looks phenomenal.

Quotes:

Another reason (among many) why I love Pinterest is the inspirational words of wisdom plastered throughout the site. Sometimes we all need a little pick-me-up, these quotes were mine for the week.

DIY:

Pin #10 is obviously appropriate for the season, how fun are these painted pumpkins? Sara from SincerelySarad gives an awesome tutorial on painting pumpkins! Check it out in the link. #11 simply served as inspiration for a future gallery wall project, and #12 helped in the creation of my tutorial on DIY sharpie mugs! Check it out: DIY Shaprie Mug

Fall Favorite Foods

As my favorite season begins I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite things with you all for the month of October. This week I will be sharing some different foods and drinks I have recently come across, and just why I love them!

Mama Chia: I hopped on the chia seed train over a year ago now and I have loved eating chia seeds, in just about everything, since. Chia seeds are little tiny black seeds filled with tons of health benefits including various nutrients, protein and antioxidants. Mama Chia are jell-0y like drinks filled with the seeds. Okay, that kind of sounds gross but trust me, they are delicious and a perfect way to reboot your day! So far I have tried Coconut Mango, Strawberry Lemonade and Blackberry Hibiscus, which is my favorite. You can purchase them for $2.99 each at Target or Jewel!

Starbuck’s Iced Chai Tea: I love my coffee, I really do. I can’t help but love the classic Pumpkin Spice Latte, but an Iced Chai is my drink of the choice this Fall. If you aren’t familiar with chai tea go out and buy some now! It is a milkier tea with a little spice (I like to call it Christmas tea) and it is beyond delicious. Starbuck’s Iced Chai is the perfect alternative to coffee if you are looking to lessen your dosage of caffeine for the day.

Cookie Butter: Imagine peanut butter mixed with cookies. Yum, right? That is literally what this stuff is. If you love cookies you will adore this. Trader Joe’s sells the “original” one but I also recently picked up a knock off from Aldi! Spread it on your toast in the morning, eat it with graham crackers or how I do, with a spoon!

Noodles & Company Pesto Cavatappi: Most of you have probably heard of or even tried this dish from Noodles, but if you haven’t (like me until recently) I definitely recommend doing so immediately! The noodles are literally what the title says, noodles with pesto and man, they are good. Add chicken to the dish and a rice krispie for dessert!

Sea Salt and Vinegar Kettle Chips: My mouth literally waters when I even think about these chips. I love them that much. I can literally eat an entire bag in an hour. These chips are the perfect snack (when portioned correctly) and also serve as the most craving food on the planet, so I advice you to eat them cautiously!!

Sargento’s Balanced Breaks: These little things are my favorite on the go snack lately, they are little packets with cheese, nuts and dried fruit under 200 calories. I love the little boost of protein they give and how quickly I can just throw them in my lunch box!

What are your favorite foods this month?

My MarleyLilly

So I finally caved. I have been completely adoring every single monogrammed thing I see lately and I finally gave in. My happiness when this purchase arrived was indescribable. I bought a monogrammed vest from MarleyLilly (the monogrammed quilted vest to be exact). If you don’t already own a vest, get one now! Vests are the staple to have this fall, they are perfect to be paired with sweaters, flannels and scarves. Also they add extra warmth on the cooler days.

I would say that MarleyLilly is the cutest site ever and I will most definitely be shopping it again. If you have not yet checked it out I definitely recommend doing so! They sell everything monogrammed, and by everything I mean anything from lunch boxes to personalized boots. They almost always have a sale of some sort. Currently they have: spend $50 free shipping and also spend $50 to get a free tee. (But hurry the free tee sale only lasts until tomorrow!) Typically I dislike ordering online because the packages take forever to arrive but I was pleased to receive my vest two days after purchasing. I may be revisiting the shop soon to buy more! I’ve listed my “wish list” below, check it out for more adorable MarleyLilly items.

Happy Fall everyone!

DIY Sharpie Mug: The Pinterest Phenomenon

If you are a frequent pinner like me (and if you aren’t you really should be!) you have probably seen the cute little DIY sharpie mug tutorials all over the site. I’ve been wanting to try one for myself for a while now and I finally got around to doing it this week. Before I started I read through dozens of tutorials I found on Pinterest to find out what works, what doesn’t and how I can make the best sharpie mugs for me and also what I can recommend for you! So here are the top tips I gathered:

1.) Use OIL BASED sharpies! The regular kind will quickly wash away. Also purchase them in a small package at Michaels and use a 40% One Item coupon from their website.

2.) Wash them by hand. Some tutorials claim that when oil based markers are used they are dishwasher safe but the evidence is not consistent enough for my liking. I definitely recommend hand washing any mugs you create.

3.) Create simple designs. Don’t go trying to cover the entire mug in color or making giant designs filled in with lots of color, the sharpie will most likely fade or chip pretty quickly. Go for more minimalistic designs like dots, lines, small shapes, words, etc.

4.) Use colors that work. Based on the many tutorials I have researched Black, Silver, Gold, Yellow, Pink, Brown, Dark Green are GOOD colors that will last and not change or fade in color. BAD colors that change color include: Orange (turns brown), Blues, both dark and light (turn green), Purple (turns pink), Red (turns a dark burgundy), Lime Green (turns to more of a pea green), and White (yellows).

5.) If you make a mistake while creating rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover can easily remove the excess sharpie.

So now let’s get to making the mugs!

Materials:

  • Some cheap white mugs: buy them at the dollar store
  • Oil based sharpie markers: get a Michaels coupons on the website, they almost always have 40% off one regular priced item.
  • Nail Polish remover and cotton balls: to fix those little mistakes, it’s best to fix them right when they happen. If you wait for the sharpie to dry a bit the coloring will be more difficult to remove and will leave a residue.

How to make your DIY sharpie mug:

  1. Make sure your mugs are clean and oil free before drawing on them. You can wipe them down with rubbing alcohol or simply wash them first.
  2. Pick your design and create! There are tons of adorable ideas for design all over Pinterest check out my DIY board for some ideas!
  3. Once your mug is designed let it dry for AT LEAST 24 hours before heating it in the oven.
  4. When it’s time to “cook” your mug pre-heat your oven for 400 degrees. Place your mug upside down on a baking sheet right away, allowing the oven to heat itself up while the mug is inside. Once the oven hits 400 degrees set your timer for 30 minutes. When the 30 minutes is up turn off the oven and crack the door, but DO NOT take the mug out. Allow the mug to cool completely inside the oven.
  5. Voila you are done! You now have a cute little DIY mug to sip your coffee, tea or whatever it is you drink for the colder season! Again I recommend hand washing all DIY sharpie mugs!

Try my favorite drink for fall: Mystic Chai Tea from Sam’s Club! I love all chai tea, but this is my all time favorite. It’s very creamy and is very light on the spice.

Enjoy your DIY Sharpie Mugs!

Todays Outfit: Fall colors

Actually this outfit was from earlier this week. Who knew keeping up with school, work, a social life and a blog would be so time-consuming? Life gets so busy sometimes it’s unreal. I’ve been trying hard to keep up with everything and I’m learning it’s impossible. Before I talk about my outfit I just wanted to talk a little about handling my crazy life and some of my little ways to lessen the stress!

I will be honest I am not a very organized person. My room is almost always a mess and my mind matches. With all the things I have been doing lately I have had to make my mind at least a little more organized, here are a few of my tips:

Use a planner: My planner is my life. I write everything down in it, literally everything and I look through it every night to make sure it all gets done. There are so many cute ones in so many different formats and sizes, I purchased mine for about $8 at Target but Lilly Pulitzer has the cutest ones around.

Sticky note it: Along with my planner I always carry a pack of sticky notes in my bag. You can write extra little reminders to put inside your planner, or to stick where you will see them (on your bathroom mirror, in your car, on your desk).

Carry a BAG not a purse: Being constantly on the go I have found that those cute little cross bodies are not for me, I can never fit everything I need. Carrying a larger purse or bag allows room for everything and room to keep those little extras always in your purse (i.e.: gum, pain killers, extra makeup bag, planner, etc).

Onto my outfit! Fall is among us and so is fall fashion. I picked up this dress from Forever 21 earlier this week and fell instantly in love with its color and its material. This style of dress has been popping up everywhere and so have the booties, which I am obsessed with by the way. I got this pair at (where else…) Target for around $35. For heels they are easy to walk in and comfortable.

Enjoy the Autumn weather!

See you soon.

Making Your Monogram

I have recently fallen completely in love with the monogram phenomenon. Having you initials on everything, how cute is that!? I think it is completely adorable and I truthfully want everything I own to be monogrammed. But I don’t want to pay to steep prices to do it. I’ve searched the sites that will do it for you, simply provide them your initials and they will ship monogrammed things to your house, but they are expensive! Also I have researched the DIY route, there are many sites that will create a monogram for you, but they often also require a purchase. Being a savvy spender and also an avid DIYer I was determined to find a way to monogram my things on my own, and I have finally found it!

Monogram text download

The link above is to a website that allows you to download a monogram font to Word for free. In the many DIY monogram tutorials I have watched they typically require programs such as Adobe Photoshop, something most household computers do not have. This tutorial is for Microsoft Word and can be done on any Mac computer (I have not tried it on Windows).

First and foremost download the Monogram text link above to your computer. Simply click the download button in the right hand corner and open the downloaded folder on your desk top. Click and open the 2nd document in the folder, called: “Monogram kk sc.” A small box will pop up with an install button, click it and open Microsoft Word. Search the font name “Monogram kk sc” in your fonts and it should be there!

The trick to making monograms with this font is to use separate text boxes, you can more easily move the letters and position them how you please. When creating a monogram remember the order is: First initial, last initial, middle initial. You want you last initial to be in the middle and typically largest. I made my middle letter 300 pt. and my outer letters 260 pt.

Also screen-shotting is your best friend when making monograms. On a Mac simultaneously hold down Shift+Command+4. Tutorials on screen-shotting can quickly be found online when searched in google.

You can easily add cute shapes and borders to your monograms in Word as well. Click the Shape menu in the right hand corner under the Home tab to create a shape. I like the “Plaque” shape, but simple circles and rectangles are also great for a border. After you have created a shape copy and paste (Command+C) your monogrammed letters into the shape one by one, and re-position as desired. Make sure to put a text wrap on your monogram, In Front of Text will place the monogram in front of the shape. You can also use the re-order tool to position it in front of the shape.

You can fill your shape with a color or add a border to it by clicking Fill and Line under the format tab. It also gives you options to change the weight of the line, this will make it thicker. Along with filling and changing the color of the shape, you can do the same to the monogram. Simply change the color with the button on the left hand side under the Home tab, like you would change any other text. Add a border to text by clicking the blue/white outlined A on the left side of the Home tab, then under Outline click “more lines.” You can change the weight, gradient and color of the border with the options listed.

Simply add a background behind your monogram and screenshot it to create fillers for binders, a computer background, notebook cover, etc. I searched Lily Pulitzer backgrounds in google images and loved the turn out! (Remember whenever searching for photos in google images use the search tools to change the size the Large, this will ensure you find the highest quality images that can easily be cropped/altered.)

Enjoy!

Today’s Outfit: Back in Black

As August comes to an end summer is beginning to wind down here in Illinois, meaning one thing for me: fall clothes! Fall is my favorite season of the year and with the cloudy skies today it was the perfect time to dress for the season. I spent the day shopping with a friend and eating the best store-bought gelato on the market. Seriously, I am now obsessed with talenti gelato, the Coffee Chocolate Chip one is to die for! (TRY IT!)

Pretty much everything I wore today I have had in my closet for quite a while, the jeans are a pair I’ve been wearing for over a year now from Hollister. Don’t be afraid to re-wear clothing you have had for a while, I don’t know about you, but I don’t spend $30 on a shirt to wear it once or twice! Make the most out of the things you already have in your closet, you’ll be amazed by the fun outfits you can create.

The t-shirt I’m wearing is just a cheapie I picked up a while ago from Target, and the cardigan is from H&M. I can’t stress enough to invest in basics! A mistake that we all make is purchasing too many articles of print, or pieces that are not very versatile. Invest in a couple of plain tees, sweaters and tanks. Basic, plain colored clothing items are essential to any outfit and easily accessorize.

The booties I wore today are actually a pair from last winter, I picked them up at Kohls during a sale at the end of the fall season. They have been one of my favorite items in my closet since. My bag is the only new item from my outfit today, I purchased it last week from (where else) Target on clearance for about $14. I finished my outfit off with my gold-plated black statement necklace. I’ve had it stashed away for a while now, it’s so versatile and I absolutely love it.

I just want to quickly mention my hair today; I tried something new. I’ve been seeing tons of girls wearing a little half bun lately and I’ve been wanting to try it. After a few tries I think I have the do mastered. It’s quick, easy and probably my go to hairstyle from now on!

Happy Sunday everyone.
